WHO WE ARE

Brittany Alston 

Executive Director 

Brittany Alston (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Philly Black Worker Project where she supports organizing and campaigning with Black workers in the temp industry. Prior to this, she was Research Director at the Action Center on Race and the Economy. Brittany came into the labor movement as a union researcher and is passionate about supporting new campaigners and building power alongside workers. She also enjoys crate digging and watching scandalous investigative documentaries. 

 

Brittany holds a B.A. in urban policy and planning from Rutgers University and a Master’s degree in city planning from University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design.

Shakiya Canty

Advisory Board Member, Organizing Committee 

Shakiya Canty is a 4th generation West Philadelphian who enjoys identifying innovative approaches and improved solutions to social movement and organizational challenges. She has deep interests in economics alternatives and currently works as a city-wide housing organizer.

Sheri Davis

 Board Member

Sheri Davis is Associate Director of the Center for Innovation in Worker Organization (CIWO) and Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR), Co-director of WILL Empower (Women Innovating Labor Leadership), National Black Worker Center Board Member, Crunk Feminist Collective contributer, and a proud new AAUP-AFT union member.

Briheem Douglas

Briheem is the Vice President of Local 274's Executive Board and a long time union organizer, after over a decade of work in the food service and hospitality industry. He also supports the UNITE HERE Philadelphia Hospitality Academy program, providing training and employment for workers in culinary, hotel housekeeping and server roles.

Munira Lokhandwala

Munira Lokhandwala is the Program Manager and a researcher at LittleSis/Public Accountability Initiative, focusing on corporate and government accountability, power research, and training up organizers and activists in conducting their own corporate campaign research. Previously she spent several years as a union organizer and is now a proud member of @LittleSisUnion.

Sheila Madalli

Sheila Maddali (she/her) is the Executive Director of the National Legal Advocacy Network where she uses legal resources to support worker organizing and embolden the low-wage worker movement. Prior to working at NLAN, Sheila served as the Director of Law & Organizing at the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and worked as an Organizer.

Danielle Newsome

Danielle Newsome is a former union organizer and labor lawyer who now prosecutes employers that commit wage theft and other crimes against workers. She was born and raised in Germantown where she still lives today.

Shanayah Wyche

Born and raised Philadelphia, Shanayah has connections with almost every corner of the city she calls home. With a deep love for the creativity and diversity Philly has to offer, Shanayah wants to see safer communities, greener spaces and healed families.
